Architectural Reserve Village of Bojentsi

Huddled at the foot of the picturesque Stara Planina Mountain, just 13 km away from the town of Gabrovo, the village of Bojentsi is virtually one of the very few settlements in Bulgaria, which have entirely preserved their authentic Revival atmosphere. The valuable architectural monuments, authentic cobble-stone streets, rich ethnographic collections give Bojentsi and its about one hundred houses and 7-8 public buildings, every right to be declared an Architectural and historical reserve.
A legend, which was passed from generation to generation until the present day, takes us back to the tragic year of 1393 when Tarnovo, the capital city of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom was seized by the Turks. Back then Bojana, a widowed noble woman, left town with her children in search for a refuge. The only way to freedom lay through the mountain. There, at the foamy brooks and streams, within the deep recesses of the mountain, right next to a cold-water spring, out of sight of the enslavors, Bojana stopped and laid the first stone in the foundations of a new settlement that was later named after her. Tucked away in the opulent verdancy of two opposite hills, today the beautiful houses of Bojentsi meet the sunrises and sunsets in timeless peace and quiet.
